Government Museum, Mathura

The place Mathura is located on the western bank of river Yamuna. This place is famous as Lord Krishna’s birthplace. It is just 145 km away from the main city Delhi. It is a place full of cultures. The Government Museum in Mathura is full of so much valuable information.  It throws a light on many forms of arts. In 1874, the museum was started by the FS Growse. Earlier, it is named as the Curzon Museum of Archaeology. During the celebration of the centenary of the museum, the name was changed to the Government Museum. It is one of the most popular and best museums in India. Many people from all over the world visit Mathura to surf valuable information in this museum. It is also one of the leading research, study, and preservation center.

The museum has a beautiful octagonal structure. It is built by using red sandstone. The tourists can visit this museum for viewing the ancient sculptures of Mathura. The museum also has statues of Kanishka, Buddha in standing position, mother goddess and various others. The tourists can also view the different collection of coins of gold, silver, copper, and terracotta. There are also various ancient paintings in the museum. The tourists can also view the pottery, clay seals and bronze sculptures.

It is just 2.5 km away from the railway station of Mathura. The entry fee for adults is Rs 5 and for foreigners, it is Rs 25. The opening time of the museum is from 10 AM to 5 PM. It remains closed on Mondays.
