In 1573, the Agra fort was built by Akbar. It is one of the main residences of the Mughals located in Agra Uttar Pradesh. It covers an area of 380,000 square meters. It is located on the bank of river Yamuna. The fort was completed in 8 years by the 4000 workers. The Mughals left the fort in 1638 when they moved from Agra to Delhi. It is just 2.5 km away from the Taj Mahal. Nowadays, it is one of the main spots for tourists that attract many people from all over the country.

The fort has a semicircular shape from the top and it is covered by double and big walls of red sandstone. The wall is 70 feet in height and 2km in the perimeter. The walls have beautiful curves and support. The fort mainly covers 2.5 km area. Every 4 sides of the fort have a gate. The most famous gates are of Delhi and Lahore gate. The Delhi gate was used by the Akbar as the main entrance. The Lahore gate was known as Amar Singh gate. There was also a gate inside, which is named as Elephant gate. With this strong entrance, it becomes very difficult to enter into the gate.

There is number of palaces and halls inside the fort. The most beautiful palaces of India are Mahal of Shah Jahani, Khas Mahal, and Macchi Bhavan. There comes a courtyard from the gate of Amar Singh. On the right-hand side, there is a Diwan-I-Am hall. There is also well-known masjid including Nagina and Mina Masjid.  There is also a bath that is made up of marbles that gives a royal look. It is the bath that was used by the princesses. The fort has built-in marketplace and worship place for people. There is also a secret way present at the base of the fort. This passage was used at the time of emergency.

There are also many other spots for the tourists including the garden of grapes, tower of Jasmine, Shish Mahal, and many other places. There were around 500 building in the fort. The buildings are made up of Red sandstone but Shah Jahan like the beauty of white marble which is the real beauty of India. So, he destroyed many of the buildings and rebuild by using white marble. He builds Musamman Burj, where he used to spend his days. It is located on the left side of Khaas Mahal. The tourists can also view the Taj Mahal from this spot. The walls are made hollow from the inside, which is then filled with water. This is to make the rooms inside the fort cool every time. There are many structures located inside the fort including Shahjahani Mahal, Babur’s Baoli, Jahangir’s Hauz, Ghazni Gate, Bengali Mahal, Akbar’s Mahal, Diwan-I-Am and many other spots.


The fort has many secret tunnels, ways, apartments and many other things. It is the must visit place for the tourists. You can visit this place at any time between Sunrise to Sunset. The entry is only through the Amar Singh gate.
