This festival is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna who is also the eighth reincarnation of Lord Vishnu.This festival is celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and gusto.

Lord Krishna is also known as Govinda. In other parts of the country, this festival is called Gokulashtami. This day the entire country worship Lord Krishna. Dahi Handi celebration is held on the second day of the Gokulashtmani and it is the most popular in Mumbai. Clay pots are filled with curd, butter, and coins which are hanged at a height through ropes. Many people make a human pyramid to reach the height of the pot and the person on the top breaks the pot. This ritual signifies the life of Lord Krishna who used to do this in his childhood days as mentioned in the Holy Books. This festival is a way to relive the pranks played by Govinda.

This festival is celebrated in August in many parts of India. This festival highlights the religious beliefs of the people here. People go to temples and pray to god and goddesses. People wear new clothes and celebrate this day by dancing and singing. The houses are decorated with leaves, flowers, rangolis, etc. The aura of celebration fills everyone’s heart with utmost happiness and joy.
