Garjiya Devi Temple

A well-known religious place located in the Garjiya village of Nainital, Garjia Devi Temple is an ancient temple that is built on a large rock, in the middle of river Kosi. It has been believed that this rock came down during a flood. The temple is about 12km away from Ramnagar and was lesser known till 1940 after which the number of devotees increased rapidly. It was reconstructed in 1970.

The temple is devoted to Goddess Parvati, the daughter of Himalaya and the wife of Lord Shankar. It has been believed that when the rock (along with the temple built on it) came down in the Kosi river, it was stopped by Bhairav Devta.  It is the reason that the prayer at this temple is considered as incomplete without worshipping Bhairava.

You can see a great rush of devotees in this temple on Kartik Poornima and this is the best time to seek blessings of Goddess Garjiya. Also, you can visit this temple anytime between November and December. Avoid visiting Garjiya Devi Temple in monsoon season because the level of water rises in the river.
